ShopSmith Combination Woodworking Machine - Questions

I have never seen nor used a ShopSmith unit but have been offered a 1958 model. What is your experience with this equipment? Can it be fixed or repaired. Does the company still exist?

---------------------

-The company is still around and the machine probably can be fixed. A new one is about the same price as all the individual tools that it mimics. The TS setup is too tall and the table is too small. It does make a good lather however.

-Actually, the Mark V is still in production, but is now sold in the model 510 configuration as opposed to the original Mark V model 500. The two are basically the same, but the 510 has a more elaborate table/fence system which still IMO falls far short of competing with a conventional TS. The lathe, drill press, and horizontal boring features are more than adequate for most hobbyists.

My 1956 vintage Mark V/500 has some minor differences from today's model, but is still fully supported by SS as far as parts, accessories, and tech support. SS offers a comprehensive user's manual with which a moderately handy person can perform most repairs and maintenance.
