I'm looking for woodworking plans to build wine racks for my wine cellar. I
would rather spend my money on the wine rather that expensive wood racking
system. I'm a carpenter so building them is no problem.

-This web site has lots of pictures of winecellars around the world. Perhaps
you could get some ideas from here. http://www.stratsplace.com/cellaralbum.html -I made one for my cellar out of 48 inch 1x6 boards. With a hole saw I cut
holes to fit the base of a bottle, all down the board, then ripped it in
half. You get two back-end pieces that way. Space the holes so the bottles
will be about an inch apart when laid. Then I cut smaller holes at the same
centres on another board, to cradle the neck. Rip in half for two front
pieces. I reinforced these pieces by right-angle a piece of 1X2 under them to help
them take the weight. I got twelve bottles per shelf, and built it ten shelves high, for a
ten-case rack. The side pieces are simply 1x6 boards to which the back
pieces and front pieces are butt-joined with screws. I put another board
across the top, and angled two boards to make a V on the back for rigidity. I positioned the front cradles so that the bottles are slightly nose-down,
and this makes reading labels a bit easier too. Next time I would build it
backwards so the butt of the bottle faces out, it would be easier to lay the
bottles and easier to read labels. Mine is rough, but if you got out there with a drum sander you could make
all the holes smooth, and finish it up with varnish. if you used
hardwood like apple or cherry you could even make it into a piece of fine
furniture, but it is in a dark cellar so I didn't care about that.
