I want to get into woodworking (reading and learning at this
point) but don't know much about fine woodworking tools. I was hoping
that someone could give me an idea of which tool makers are worth
buying from and which I should avoid because I would have to buy
better later when I do more exacting work. Also anyone know of
woodworking classes or clubs in the Tampabay area?

-Get on the web and search for "woodworking florida". There are several
guilds to choose from. Check out the Woodcraft store in Clearwater for
classes. -I don't have any experience with the Shopsmith so I will not be critical of
it.
I do have some thoughts on combo tools in general though. In order to do
various operation, they must compromise something. In the 50's, Popular
Science had articles on cars that became boats or care that became
airplanes. Where are they now? Dedicated tools just work better. Think about what you may be doing in the
shop. You cut a piece of wood. Then you want to drill a hole in it. Next
you want to cut out finder groove on the bandsaw. Once these operations are
complete, the spindle sander will give it a nice smooth edge. Will you want
to change the setup of the tool to complete all of these operation?
Probably not.
