I have been dabbling in this craft for several years now and I consider
myself a hobbyist.
My question is, how many of you folks build things off prepared plans and
how many just wing it.
I normally get an inspiration for a project on my long commute to work. I
then start the project, working out the details on small note pads located
around my shop. Every day on my drive, I work out my next move. This method
has caused an incredible amount of errors and problems, but it has taught me
how to repair mistakes. Usually the finished product will be slightly
different than my original inspiration, due to the afore mentioned mistakes
and also to design changes I come up with along my journey. But on the other
hand, what I end up with is always unique and well constructed.
The only thing I have built with plans has been Norm's original router
station. I love the finished product but I found it was not as satisfying
always knowing what my next step was going to be.
I realize I end up wasting a lot of materials, although my mis-cuts usually
end up in other projects.
I always tell people woodworking is a very expensive hobby, especially when
you woodwork, the way I woodwork!

Plans typically give me a rough idea and I innovate and wing it from there to
make the item my own. Other times I do as you, think, dabble, draw and burn a
lot of brain cells coming up with something.
